Big city flair in pint-sized eateries – new cafés and Bistros in Innsbruck


For years they have decorated the streets and townscapes in the big cities of this world: small, exclusive and individual cafés, bars and bistros that serve the finest homemade specialities. Places where trendsetters, foodies, bobos and hipsters meet. Each location is unique in itself and the owners themselves usually stand behind the bar and bake or cook, whilst serving their valued clientele with love and dedication. And as luck would have it, over the past few weeks and months these trendy hangouts seem to be mushrooming in the alpine metropolis of Innsbruck.


Klein und Fein

What makes Klein und Fein so special? The name (Klein und Fein literally means small yet charming) says it all: I am constantly amazed at how many delicacies can fit in such a small space.

What is on the menu? The counter groans under the weight of so many delicious homemade cakes. Petra Unterweger also serves a selection of salads and soups as well as a daily lunch menu with a vegetarian and non-vegetarian version.

Signature dish? What do you recommend? Could it be the Torta alla Nonna? Or the green salad with goat cheese and homemade bread? And what about the dainty chocolate tartlets?

Style? Romantic, pretty, with much care and attention to detail. Outdoor seating available.


What makes Haepinest so special? This is where Maria Klingler and Michael Hörl serve perfectly roasted and brewed coffee in a very appealing and relaxed ambience.

What is on the menu? Sandwiches, cakes and breakfast specialities such as porridge, acai-bowl or homemade granola.

Signature dish? What do you recommend? The so-called „Third-Wave-Coffee“ – Michael uses this term to describe the reappearance of small but excellent roasting businesses as well as quality and diversity after the initial wave of  Starbucks euphoria. Either as an espresso or filtered coffee. Yes, you have read correctly. This filter coffee, however, has nothing to do with the brown slop one usually associates with filtered coffee. It is ground personally by Haepinest and prepared using sophisticated technology, so that tasty and well-rounded coffee ends up in the cup.

Style? A little Scandi, a little vintage, a little eco. Maria and Michael wanted to create a lounge atmosphere and I personally think they have succeeded in doing just that. Outdoor seating available.


Crema Coffee and Delights

What makes Crema Coffee and Delights so special? Julia Steinlechner aspires to spoiling her guests with a perfect cup of coffee – brewed with a Faema E 61 Legend. This machine has the same significance for coffee lovers as a piece from the latest Celine collection would have for fashionistas or a Porsche old-timer for car enthusiasts …

What is on the menu? Coffee specialities, homemade cakes and sweet pastries. Weekly varying lunch snacks are also available.

Signature dish? What do you recommend? The croissants, delivered directly from a French pastry chef. According to Julia, the best in Innsbruck. And of course the coffee.

Style? Lots of light-coloured wood, a little Danish, straightforward yet cosy. Outdoor seating available.


1639 – Die Meierei

What makes 1639 – Die Meierei so special? The fact that Meierei is located in the “Wagner’sche“ bookshop speaks volumes in itself. Or that the owner, Nina Rettenbacher, grows her own herbs, berries, vegetables and salads on the rooftop garden, from which she creates refined and healthy dishes …

What is on the menu? Breakfast and lunch menu with weekly varying specialities using regional and seasonal ingredients as well as tempting snacks.

Signature dish? What do you recommend? Hhmm, Nina’ cuisine is varied, creative and healthy. She sources new inspiration, ideas and recipes from the extensive selection of cookbooks in Wagnerschen.

Style? Urban and personal at the same time. Guests sit at a large wooden table in the centre of the room, or pleasant alcoves next to the windows and can see Nina at work in the open kitchen. The small rooftop terrace is particularly popular in summer


Robo Slowfood

What makes Robo Slowfood so special? Inspired by good street food and bored by time-consuming set lunches at restaurants, Robert Oberzaucher created his own concept – here you can enjoy fast-slow-food, made from quality ingredients and cooked with love. Mmmmh, delicious!

What is on the menu? Daily changing menus – there is always one vegetarian and one „meat“ option.

Signature dish? What do you recommend? It is difficult to say, as there is something different every day! But the USP (as one says in this day and age) are those inspired by international street foods and delicacies with a regional twist- such as falafel made from the very best young Austrian potatoes and organic lentils.

Style? Industrial, „raw“, used-look, informal, international. Outdoor seating available.


What makes COFFEEkult so special? Multi-award winning barista, Cem Korkmaz, does not make it easy for his guests – they are spoilt for choice with a selection of 14 different roasts. But it doesn’t matter which one you plump for – all coffees are refined in their own roasting facility in Innsbruck. Quality and taste are always second to none!

What is on the menu? Diverse coffees from around the world – from Ethiopia to Brazil. Small canapés, brownies and some homemade cakes are also available. There is also a small lunch menu in the branch in AZW.

Signature dish? What do you recommend? Cem recommends a tasting journey through the world coffee map – only then can you really find out where the roots for your personal taste lie.

Style? The man of the house wanted a „no-frills“ interior, so guests can concentrate on the task in hand – great coffee. Nevertheless, the interior is attractive – I particularly like the bar area in the front section.



What makes Frei.Zeit so special? This is a great venue for an after-work or post-shopping drink. A small yet charming café with a dusky atmosphere and friendly owner. The real trump card is its garden – one of the most adorable throughout Innsbruck.

What is on the menu? Fine wines, varying snacks and homemade cakes.

Signature dish? What do you recommend? A glass of bubbly Austrian rose on the charming backyard terrace.

Style? An attractive mix of muted colours, subdued lighting and a little boho.


Immerland“ on Wiltener Platzl also fits in this category – Christina has already written about this café in one of her posts. And lovingly prepared homemade food can also be enjoyed at“Gleim“ in the Mariahilfstrasse.

I also stumbled upon Café Genuss in Alpbach by chance in Facebook – which also looks good, judging by the pictures. Unfortunately, I haven’t yet managed to visit it personally.
